North Fulton Tutoring & Literacy Project
What are the advantages of bringing my child to NFTLP?
We believe that a professional learning environment, or Center-Based Tutoring, provides several advantages when compared with traditional tutoring (conducted in the student's home or a public location). The learning environment is a key component of your child's educational needs. While home may provide some advantages (like easy access to the refrigerator) it holds some disadvantages that you may not have considered. Distractions such as siblings, friends, telephones, TV or the family pet can really hamper your child's ability to focus on his or her work. Public locations often have other challenges. Public libraries have great access to books, but other patrons circulating throughout the facility, library events, etc., can also divert your child's attention. Some tutors even work out of the local coffee house. We believe that there is a better way. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere that will help your child get the most out of study time.
NFTLP has a learning area specifically designed to minimize distractions and provide students with a learning environment that is set up to help them be more successful. Distractions found at home, out in public, and even those your child faces as part of a large class in school, have been minimized. Children can expect to spend time working and learning (either individually or with their small group) in an environment that it set up to help them succeed.
Why does NFTLP emphasize Small Group Tutoring?
Unfortunately, with current budget cuts in our school districts, class sizes are on the rise. You may have already experienced this. While 23 children vs. 19 children may not seem to make that much of a difference, such a jump in student numbers impacts the classroom teacher's ability to respond to the needs of individual students. This usually occurs through no fault of the teacher. In most cases, there simply isn't enough of her to go around.
Is there a reasonable solution to this problem? We think so. Small Group Tutoring provides an opportunity for students to learn in a small group setting with students in the same class or grade. It provides an opportunity for your child to engage in additional study of concepts that your child is learning in the classroom. Study within a small group allows your child to become more aware of solutions to problems that he or she may not have come up with alone. During Group Tutoring, students will work collaboratively to solve common sample problems. They will then work individually to solve problems assigned in school.
A final consideration is monetary. Individual tutoring can be quite expensive. Large centers often charge $50.00 an hour (or more!) for tutoring. Their services can be quite good. Still, in these dificult economic times, families need to be mindful of their spending choices. If quality tutoring was available for $20.00, $15.00 or even $10.00 an hour, would more families be able to afford it? Here at NFTLP we think so. We are committed to providing quality educational services at affordable rates. If your child needs a tutor, but money is tight, Group tutoring may be a great solution for you!
Do you offer private, individual tutoring for my child?
Absolutely! For those families who feel that individual tutoring is the best "fit" we offer this service at the rate of $40.00/hour. Your child will receive individualized instruction designed to build upon existing strengths and provide support where it is most needed. A State Certified, experienced teacher will help your child to more fully understand challenging subject matter.
My child will be starting Kindergarten next year and our family chose to keep him at home this year. Do you offer any services for Pre-K students?
We do! NFTLP is excited to offer Early Literacy sessions specifically designed with families like yours in mind! We fully understand and respect your choice to spend that last year before Kindergarten with your child...there really is no better place than home!
We want your family to have the best of both worlds! Our Pre-K sessions offer an hour of pre-literacy and early literacy activities that will provide a strong Reading and Literacy foundation for your child before school actually starts...for about $10.00 an hour!
You can expect your child to take part in rich literacy building activities every day he/she receives instruction. A certified teacher (holding a M. Ed. with currrent State of Georgia Certification and Specializing in Reading and Language Arts instruction) will guide your child's rapidly evolving concepts of print, phonemic awareness, sound/symbol correspondence, and word study. Through daily "read alouds" your child will learn proper intonation, rhythm and rhyme. Your child will learn how to share ideas with others in our daily Circle Time, gaining valuable experience with both listening and speaking. Participation in drawing, games and other enriching activities will help your child to develop a love of reading that will prove useful in the school aged years and beyond.
Your Pre-K child will take part in actual reading experiences! Through the Language Experience Approach, Mr. A will teach your child to identify and read many of the most common words he or she is already using. While some of the specific skills associated with reading may still be out of reach for your child, we can definitely build a solid foundation now. The greatest educational gift we can offer young children is a solid foundation in literacy. Virtually every other subject taught in school rests upon a child's ability to read. Generally speaking, good students are good readers, and good readers are good students. While learning is still a time of wonder...before the pressures of school begini, let us share our love of reading with your child. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity! Small groups of Pre-K students are forming now!
What about parent participation?
While parents are not expected to be present during tutoring, they are certainly welcome to stay and observe for a few minutes. We understand that the Center-Based approach is unfamiliar to many families and that caring moms and dads may want to make sure that their child is happy, safe and learning. While the space is not set up for large numbers of parents to participate on a daily basis, we welcome you to spend a few moments to make sure that everything meets your expectations. Please respect the fact that other families have paid for services and will want the tutor's attention to be directed toward helping their children learn too. Remember, Center-Based Tutoring seeks to minimize distractions!
