Since testing time is here in many local schools, I thought it might be helpful to review some basic test taking skills.  Some of the ideas listed here are better suited to the typical classroom test, while others may be applied in any testing situation. 

Please remember that parents play an active role in their child's success.  Taking care of "the basics" is a great way to start!  A good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast help get your child off on the right foot!  You can also take a few moments to speak with your child about test taking strategies.  Feel free to share your own ideas and always remember to provide your child with lots of encouragement and support.

Before the Test

(Successful students use these strategies every day!)

Pay attention in class: listen to the teacher, take notes, and ask questions.

Work during class time: complete your classwork (ask questions if you need to.)

Do your homework.

Get a good night’s sleep.

Eat a healthy breakfast.

(On Test Day)

Prepare yourself for the test: sharpen pencils, get paper, use the bathroom, etc.

During the Test

Put your name and date on the test.

Read all directions carefully.

Read each question (or problem) carefully.

Underline the question.

Circle important information that will help you solve the problem.

If you don’t understand the question, ask the teacher to help you understand it.

Reread the question.

Work slowly and carefully.

Check ALL your work.

Reread the question:

Did you answer all parts of the question?

Does your answer make sense?

Is your answer reasonable?

Use all available testing time. If you finish before the testing time is over, go back and check each item carefully.
