Some Ideas for Test Taking

Posted by Tim Angersbach (Mr. A) on 26 April, 2011 at 10:03 Comments comments (5)

Since testing time is here in many local schools, I thought it might be helpful to review some basic test taking skills.  Some of the ideas listed here are better suited to the typical classroom test, while others may be applied in any testing situation.

Please remember that parents play an active role in their child's success.  Taking care of "the basics" is a great way to start!  A good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast help get your child off on the right foot!  You can also take a few moments to speak with your child about test taking strategies.  Feel free to share your own ideas and always remember to provide your child with lots of encouragement and support.

Best of luck!

Before the Test

(Successful students use these strategies every day!)

Pay attention in class: listen to the teacher, take notes, and ask questions.

Work during class time: complete your classwork (ask questions if you need to.)

Do your homework.

Get a good night’s sleep.

Eat a healthy breakfast.

(On Test Day)

Prepare yourself for the test: sharpen pencils, get paper, use the bathroom, etc.

During the Test

Put your name and date on the test.

Read all directions carefully.

Read each question (or problem) carefully.

Underline the question.

Circle important information that will help you solve the problem.

If you don’t understand the question, ask the teacher to help you understand it.

Reread the question.

Work slowly and carefully.

Check ALL your work.

Reread the question:

Did you answer all parts of the question?

Does your answer make sense?

Is your answer reasonable?

Use all available testing time. If you finish before the testing time is over, go back and check each item carefully.

Saturday Trip to the High

Posted by Tim Angersbach (Mr. A) on 3 February, 2011 at 0:45 Comments comments (41)

Hey all,

This Saturday (Feb. 5) we are heading down to the High Museum of Art.  We will be meeting at Northwood Elementary at 10:00 a.m. and we'll drive down from there.  For those of you unfamiliar with Northwood, it is located at 10200 Wooten Rd., Roswell, GA 30076.

If you have never joined us for one of these events, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised.  Families and children of all ages are welcome and this is a great opportunity to get to know some of the folks in your community.  As always, there is no charge for Fulton County residents (just bring a photo ID).

Please contact Mr. A. with any questions.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Snow & Ice Safety

Posted by Tim Angersbach (Mr. A) on 11 January, 2011 at 11:33 Comments comments (5)

With snow and ice on the ground and schools closed, children often want to enjoy some time outdoors.  While snow is a rare treat in this area, it is important to put SAFETY at the top of our list.

Children need to be especially watchful for cars when they are playing near (on sledding on) the streets.  Here are a few tips to keep your child safe:

1)  Sledding down a hill is safer than sledding in the street.

2)  It is a good idea to wear a helmet when sledding.

3)  Sled in a location that is free of large rocks, stumps, trees etc.

4)  Never sled down a steep hill into a street.  You may not be able to stop if a car is coming.

5)  If you're sledding in the street, post a "lookout" and get completely out of the street when a car is coming.

6)  Remember that cars will not be able to stop quickly and may slide when applying the brakes.

7)  Sleds are low to the ground and drivers may not be able to see sledding children.  Children need to be watching for cars.

8)  Above all, use common sense.

A final note:  If you're going out for a walk, remember to use the sidewalk rather than walking in the street.

Alright, stay safe and have fun!!!

Evan Thomas (a former student of Mr. A's.) helped format the background image for our business card.   Evan used his technical expertise to properly size an existing image so that it would fit on the card without distortion.

Thanks for your help Evan!

Saturday @ the High Museum

Posted by Tim Angersbach (Mr. A) on 15 December, 2010 at 13:35 Comments comments (4)

Hey All,

We had our first trip down to the High Museum on Dec. 4.  Joining us were families with kids from 3rd through 9th grade.  We took in the Dali and Titian Exhibits and went out for bagels at Einstein's afterward.  It was great to connect with former students and to hear about their progress!

We look forward to many more successful outings in 2011!  We will continue to focus on activities that are safe, fun and educational.  Whenever possible, we will schedule events that are free (like our trip to the High) or low cost.  As always, we are open to any suggestions.  Just drop us a line!

Wishing you and yours a safe and joyous Holiday Season!

Mr. A.
