North Fulton Tutoring & Literacy Project

About Us

Introducing Your Tutor

Tim Angersbach (Mr. A.) started working with children in 1989 as an assistant Child Care provider at a Latchkey (before and after school child care) program in his hometown of Rochester Hills, Michigan. Within six months, he was promoted and served as the Lead Child Care Provider for University Hills Elementary School between 1989 and 1996. During his eight years as an employee at U. Hills, Mr. A. gained substantial experience working with children and a solid foundation for later work as a classroom teacher. Mr. A. left the position in 1996 and worked as a residential painter from 1997 through 2000.

In January, 2001 Mr. Angersbach entered Oakland University in southeast Michigan. He did exceptionally well at his studies, completing his “core” classes and gaining admission into the Elementary Education program by 2003. During his time at Oakland, he received multiple honors, including making the Dean’s List in the Dept. of Education and Human Resources (multiple times) as well as receiving letters of recommendation from professors and cooperating teachers. Also in 2003, Mr. Angersbach completed State of Michigan Certification tests in both Social Studies and Elementary Education, earning a perfect score of 300 on the Writing portion of the Elementary Ed. test. In order to increase his knowledge of education (as well as to transition into the work place) Mr. A. also worked as a substitute teacher during this time. He taught in a diverse array of classrooms in grades K-8 and gained valuable experience teaching all core subjects at both the Elementary and Middle School levels. Mr. A. taught in several local school districts (Utica Community Schools, Rochester Schools, Pontiac Schools) working to find permanent, full time employment as a classroom teacher. In spring of 2004, Mr. Angersbach graduated summa cum laude from Oakland University, with an overall GPA of 3.94.

After completing his B.S. in Elementary Education, Mr. Angersbach continued to work as a substitute teacher. During this period, he was still actively seeking a full time teaching position in Michigan. Mr. A. reentered Oakland University in the fall of 2004 to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education (concentrating in Reading and Language Arts). He continued to substitute teach in the above mentioned districts during the day and attended the University in the evenings. In fall of 2005, Mr. A. gained employment as a long term substitute teacher, working with Cognitively Impaired students (Autism, CI, Down Syndrome, TBI). Several of his students made enormous strides in Math while under his care.

During 2005 and 2006, Mr. Angersbach successfully completed State of Michigan Certification tests in Reading and Language Arts. He also passed the State Assessments to become a Certified Reading Specialist, qualifying him to be a teacher of Reading or Language Arts or to serve as Reading Specialist in all grades K-12 (including Special Ed.). Mr. Angersbach graduated with honors from Oakland University in Spring of 2006, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and received special recognition for a maintaining a perfect (4.0) G.P.A. during his course work. With his unique combination of qualifications and experience, Mr. Angersbach hoped to find full time employment in Michigan, but finally reached the conclusion that he was more likely to be successful in another state.

Mr. Angersbach contacted the Fulton County School District in August of 2006, had successful interviews at several local schools, and ultimately decided to work at Northwood Elementary School in Roswell. Mr. A. worked as a 5th grade teacher at Northwood from 2006-2008. During these two years, Mr. A taught all levels of Math and Reading. In addition to his normal responsibilities, he volunteered his time to tutor 5th grade students in Math. Mr. Angersbach taught the Extended Day program during the 2007-2008 school year. This program serves to provide added support to students in order to help them better understand Math and Reading concepts emphasized during the school year. Such concepts were focal points during the annual CRCT assessments.

Mr. Angersbach transitioned to a 2nd grade classroom following the 2007-2008 school year. This work afforded him the opportunity to educate younger children and to teach all subject areas. Mr. Angersbach was submitted for Teacher of the Year by his colleagues in 2009. During his final year at Northwood, every student in Mr. Angersbach’s class passed all areas of the CRCT, many exceeding scores they had achieved in the 1st grade. Additionally, all of his students met or exceeded the 2nd grade reading goal of 25 AR points.

Mr. Angersbach was recognized for perfect attendance six of the eight semesters he worked at Northwood and was known for working long hours and always going the extra mile for his students. He had 100% parent participation at school conferences every year. Mr. Angersbach worked at Centennial High School, serving as Freshman Volleyball Coach during the 2010 season.

As a former public school teacher and child care professional, Mr. A. brings a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to the NFTLP. Rest assured that his years of experience and excellence in the classroom will translate into greater success and greater enjoyment of learning for your child!

Extracurricular Activities

While working at Northwood, Mr. A. organized outings to the High Museum of Art in order to provide families with an opportunity to experience art from all over the world. Local families, children of all ages (and their friends) joined in these enriching trips. Families and friends were able to view art and artifacts from many different cultures, including China, Egypt and the Near East. Mr. Angersbach led several trips down to the High while the exhibits from the Louvre were in town. For some children, this was a once in a lifetime experience. On a less formal note, Mr. A. organized Saturday activities, during which parents and children would play kickball and other games.

Mr. Angersbach and a colleague founded the Northwood Elementary Chess Club in 2006. He volunteered his time leading the Chess Club from 2006-2010. Chess Club gained in popularity each year and last year over 80 students (about 1/6 of all students at Northwood) signed up for Chess Club. Mr. Angersbach worked with Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Ketchum to make this Club a rewarding experience for participating students.

Mr. Angersbach also collaborated with other staff members to form the Annual 5th grade/Staff Kickball Game which raises money for the American Cancer Society. In addition, Mr. A. attended the Environmental “Green Team” meetings in Roswell. Mr. Angersbach also assisted in getting Recycling of paper products reinstituted at Northwood, in order to make our community a healthier place in which to live.

Behind the Scenes

There is a small but dedicated group of Moms, Dads and former students who have joined in this project to help our community become a better place. While they are silent partners here, you will surely meet them when you join us for our Community Building Activies. Without their support, advice, kindness and expertise, this project would not be possible. Thanks so much to all who have contributed!

NFTLP Today

Since January of 2011, NFTLP has served over 200 students ranging in age from four to fifty seven years. From our modest beginnings fresh out of the Fulton County School District, we have transitioned into a finely tuned small Supplemental Education operation, specializing in Early Literacy, Elementary, Middle and High School services. We have become adept at interfacing with both public and private schools in order to better meet the varying needs of our students. While NFTLP continues to provide exceptional tutoring services for younger students, our outreach has increased to include many Middle and High School students. Mr. Angersbach has continued to update his Georgia Educator Certifications in order to better meet the dynamic needs of our growing student population.

Looking Ahead to 2016

As 2016 dawns, look for NFTLP to branch out into Distance Learning. We plan to offer Literature Study groups to those students who are mature and disciplined enough to undertake independent study. Ideal candidates may find that they have the motivation to study classical and modern literature, but are unable to regularly attend sessions at the NFTLP office. NFTLP will collaborate with students to set goals for weekly reading. In addition, students will be required to summarize and respond to the selection, as well as to define any challenging vocabulary from the text. With some titles, there will also be a historical background piece, requiring minor research into a given time period, geographical location or historical figure. These sessions will take place primarily in an online setting, giving students the flexibility to complete the work at their convenience. Students will post to an online chat board and will be able to read and respond to the work of other members. In addition, actual (optional) monthly meetings for group members will be held at the NFTLP office. We look forward to exploring this forum with our more advanced students starting in January!
